World Savings Week 2021- Aji Sukia Ndateh Memorial school

Event

Financial literacy training is a module that is missing in the basic and secondary school curriculum in The Gambia. However, the ability to set financial goals and manage personal finances to achieve those goals are essential life skills that school going children would need to acquire for their adult years. To that effect, financial literacy and entrepreneurship training was organised from the 12th to 16th November 2021 for the grade 11 pupils at the Aji Sukia Ndateh Memorial school. The training, which marked the celebration of World Savings Day in The Gambia, was organized in collaboration with the Curriculum Research Evaluation Development Directorate of the Ministry of Basic & Secondary Education. The Directorate recognizes the importance of financial education and entrepreneurship training to high school pupils and is committed to introducing such training in the school curriculum.

The event was divided in two:

  • The opening ceremony and the training. During the opening ceremony, various speeches by representatives from the school management, the ministry, Credit Union Movement in The Gambia, and the Country Representative of DSIK admonished the students to inculcate the culture of saving and managing their money wisely.

  • The Sparkassenstiftung’s Micro Business and Savings games were to train the pupils in household finance management and entrepreneurship.
  • DSIK in partnership with NACCUG also supported the formation of a saving club at the Aji Sukia Ndateh Memorial School to give the opportunity to the pupils to continue to learn about and practise savings culture.

  • To help the pupils to start saving towards their future goal, DSIK donated Hippo Banks (Piggy Banks) to the savings club.

Prospects for the future

The training at Aji Sukia Ndateh is a pilot training of the introduction of financial literacy and entrepreneurship training in high schools in The Gambia. As we achieved a positive result, we plan a further Rollout to several schools in The Gambia.
