World Savings Day 2024

This year marked 100 years since the establishment of World Savings Day, created to encourage a culture of saving. In Ghana, the celebration was led by credit unions in Winneba with support from German Sparkassenstiftung Western Africa.

It was the very first time they observed the day, yet it left such an indelible mark that they plan to include it in their future activities, as it aligns with the mandate of credit unions and their goal of reaching the underserved and those in remote areas.

To mark the occasion, the credit unions—UEW Co-operative Credit Union (UEWCCU), Winneba Workers Credit Union, AES Credit Union, and CUA—who had previously engaged students from five schools in Winneba (Potsin T.I. Ahmadiyya S.H.S, Apam S.H.S, Uncle Rich S.H.S, A.M.E. Zion S.H.S, and Winneba S.H.S) in savings education, brought them together at the UEW Credit Union premises for a time of fun, learning, and talent sharing around the theme “Secure Your Tomorrow with Savings.”

The event was charged with excitement as the young students expressed, through poetry, art, and debate, the concept of saving and its importance in securing one's future.

  • Debate: They presented reasons why saving is important, along with counter-arguments that many people often give for not saving. This approach helped inform how financial education can be tailored to others, taking into account their fears, resistance, and reluctance—while also finding appropriate responses to put their minds at ease.
  • Poetry: The students wrote and performed their own poems, taking the audience on a journey filled with laughter, reflection, and emotion.
  • Painting and Drawing: Finally, through the power of art, they vividly depicted the concept of savings, bringing it to life in creative and meaningful ways.
