Overview of Sierra Leone

The Republic of Sierra Leone, informally Salone, is a country on the southwest coast of West Africa. Bordered by Liberia to the southeast and Guinea to the northeast. Sierra Leone has a total area of 71,740 km2 (27,699 sq mil) and a population of 7,092,113 as of the 2015 census. The capital and largest city is Freetown. The country is divided into five administrative regions which are subdivided into sixteen districts.


Project activities

Sparkassenstiftung, in an effort to expand operations in the region, is partnering with the National Cooperative Credit Union Association (NACCUA) Sierra Leone and the Irish League of Credit Unions Foundation Ltd. (ILCUF).

Current Projects

BMZ Funded-Sustainable transformation of the financial sector by strengthening the credit union sector and promoting equal representation of women and youth in West Africa (regional project)
The project aims to ensure the organizational development of NaCCUA and their members with the objective to provide needs based financial services to Credit Union members with special focus on: (i) Micro-, Small and Medium Entreprises, (ii) Women, and (iii) Youth”.

  • Establishing strong Regional Networks (between the associations)
  • Human resource development / training of Credit Unions
  • Financial and entrepreneurial training for MSMEs, including sustainable agriculture and climate change resiliance

BMZ Funded-Strenghtening the Credit Union Associations in Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Liberia in their organisational capacities                                                                       
The West-African Regional Project in collaboration with a partner institution, the Ghana Co-operative Credit Union Association (CUA),  aims to strengthen the Credit Unions and other microfinance institutions and associations in Ghana by developing their capacity.
